Private art museums and galleries

When their own homes lack the space to show all their art some contemporary collectors rather display the work elsewhere, than to store it in warehouses. Since the start of this century many have opened museums or galleries that are open to the public and a lot of them are are free of charge.



Collector Kim Chang-il took the Seoul office building constructed by architect Kim Swoo-geun and transformed it in 2014 to the Arario Museum for Contemporary Art.



In 2004 the Museum of Contemporary Art/Denver approached Mark Falcone and Ellen Bruss’, for help  to relocating. Not only did he donate a plot of land, he and his wife decided to move in the Art House next door.



The Arthur de Ganay Collection consists of the big names of photography it was founded in Berlin in 2006.



Baibakov Art Projects is an organization founded in 2008 by Maria Baibakova to promote Russian contemporary art within Moscow and abroad.



In 2011, Basma Al Sulaiman launched BASMOCA (Basma Al Sulaiman Museum of Contemporary Art) a collection with Western-, Middle Eastern- and Contemporary Chinese art.



The Boros Collection is the private contemporary art collection of Christian Boros on public display since 2008 in a converted bunker, situated in Berlin.



A contemporary art Museum gathering the Pinault Collection will open in Paris’ Bourse Du Commerce in 2018. The interior will get a makeover by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando.



In 2015 Eli and Edythe Broad opened The Broad contemporary art museum in Los Angeles. The museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler.



Since 2002 The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) shows artists from Latin America in it’s non-profit art space in Miami.



Founded in 2000, the Carmignac Foundation in Paris has its origins in Edouard Carmignac’s private collection of Pop Art and German expressionism.



The Danjuma Collection, was started in 2008 by young London collector Theo Danjuma. The collection has a firm focus on established conceptual and African artists.



Completed in 2009, the Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz Collection is an extension of their home. The primary purpose of this space is to provide education and awareness in the visual arts.



Founded in 2007 by British collector David Roberts and directed by curator Vincent Honoré, DRAF is a gallery space in London it focuses on contemporary art but also has historical pieces.


Next year Qiao Zhibing plans to have turned vast containers into Tank Shanghai, an international contemporary art center which will double as his private museum Dream Center.



Faena Art Center opened in 2011 and is a cultural center in Buenos Aires. Alan Faena founded the center, Ximena Caminos is the Executive Director.



Founded in 2008 by Dasha Zhukova and Roman Abramovich, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is commitment to living artists and art histories in Moscow.



A former dairy farm in Vermont The Hall Art Foundation exhibition space was founded in 2007 and shows postwar and contemporary art works from the collection Andrew and Christine Hall.



The Imago Mundi project Foundation in 2013 from the Luciano Benetton Collection. It exhibits established and emerging artists from many different countries.



From 2007 to 2012, Frank Cohen pioneered Initial Access, an foundation in Wolverhampton designed to showcase and promote younger artists from his collection.



Julia Stoschek Collection in Düsseldorf will opened 2007. The private collection of contemporary art focuses on media and video art, installations and photography.



Robert and Nicky Wilson started their contemporary sculpture park Jupiter Artland in Bonnington Scotland at the start of this century influenced by Ian Hamilton Finlay’s Little Sparta.



In 2010 Adrian Cheng founded the K11 Art Foundation (KAF) in Hong Kong it supports Chinese contemporary artists and curators. The Art Village also has artist-in-residence programs.



La maison rouge created in 2004 by Contemporary Art Collector Antoine de Galbert, occupies an old factory building renovated by architect Jean-Yves Clément and the artist Jean-Michel Alberola.



Made possible by the Laurenz Foundation Schaulager established in 1999 by Maja Oeri and her husband Hans U. Bodenmann is devoted to the promotion and support of the fine arts.



The opening of Frank Gehry’s building of Maja Hoffmann’s LUMA Arles is scheduled for 2018, an artistic program is already presented every summer in the refurbished railway warehouses.



In 2014 the Louis Vuitton Foundation opened is an art museum and cultural center promotion of art and culture in Paris. The building was also designed by the architect Frank Gehry.



The brothers Maurice and Paul Marciano private LA museum the Marciano Art Foundation will open in early 2017 in a former Masonic temple, renovated by architectural firm wHY.



The Thomas Olbricht’s me Collectors Room opened in May 2010 in Berlin. Besides temporary exhibitions, of predominantly contemporary art, the Wunderkammer is on permanent display.



The newly opened Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar houses the Dutch collectors Joop van Caldenborgh’s extensive private art collection. The building is by architecture firm Kraaijvanger.



Newport Street Gallery in London presents exhibitions of work from Damien Hirst’s art collection, it opened in 2015 the listed Victorian warehouses where converted to Caruso St John, architects.



PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv is the largest private contemporary art centre in Central and Eastern Europe. It was launched in 2006 by the Ukrainian businessman and philanthropist Victor Pinchuk.



The Qatar Museums (QM) established in 2005 by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Emir of the State of Qatar, the QM aims to combine the resources of all museums in Qatar.



In 2009, renovations were completed at Wing Sang in Vancouver to include a private exhibition space to display the Rennie Collection to the public it holds two exhibitions a year.



In 2011 Ramin Salsali founded The Salsali Private Museum [SPM], in Dubai a the first private museum for contemporary Middle Eastern and international art in the region.



Founded in 2011 by collector couple Nadia and Rajeeb Samdani, the Samdani Art Foundation in Dhaka has one of the most significant collections of South Asian Modern & Contemporary art.



In 2007 The Kunsthalle Weishaupt, building build Wolfram Wöhr architects, opened in Ulm to house Jutta and Siegfried Weishaupt’s collection of modern art.



Located in a former factory hall in Hamburg-Harburg the Falckenberg Collection since 2001, the Harald Falckenberg’s collection is open to the public by pre-registration.



Alison and Peter W. Klein have exhibited their Contemporary art and agriculture collection KUNSTWERK in Eberdingen. The museum was designed by Folker Rockel in 2007.



In 2013 Jan-Philipp Sexauer opened his own exhibition space Sexauer Gallery in Berlin. Since then it hosted numerous exhibitions by known and emerging contemporary artis.



SMAC is a project and exhibition space initiated by Stephanie Hundertmark and Matthias Birkholz in 2013. It is committed to presenting solo shows of Berlin based artists as well as curated projects.



In 2014, Taschen opened their first art gallery in Los Angeles. The publishing house employs more than 250 staff members worldwide and many longtime freelance editors.



Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is a museum of American art in Bentonville, Arkansas. The museum, founded by Alice Walton and designed by Moshe Safdie, officially opened in 2011.



In 2008 collector Richard Chang founded The Domus Collection in Beijing. The private collection presents both Eastern and Western artists.



In 2016 The Feuerle Collection, a private museum showcasing Désiré Feuerle’s collection of international contemporary and Southeast Asian art and imperial Chinese design opened in Berlin.



The Fiorucci Art Trust was founded by Nicoletta Fiorucci in 2010 to promote contemporary art in conventional and unconventional ways in London.



The Long Museum in Shanghai was officially opened to the public in 2012. It shows the collection of Wang Wei and Liu Yiqian and is designed by Chinese architect Zhong Song.



The Monsoon Art Collection London is a collection of contemporary art established by Peter Simon in 2000. The collection is known for works from Central and South America, Africa and Asia.



Mr. & Ms. Bryant’s apartment, in New York bought in 2006 and renovated in 2008, his private museum is a modern, the public rooms make up the lower floor.



James Brett’s museum of everything opened in London in 2009 and has welcomed 750,000 visitors to its critically-acclaimed installations in Britain, France, Italy and its tours across Russia and beyond.



The Salon Dahlmann named after the last owner the building in Berlin was acquired by the Miettinen family in 2010. It presents an eclectic program including a range of different formats.

Since 2007 Matthew and Iris Strauss exhibit the Strauss Family Foundation collection in Santa Fe it includes painting, sculpture, photography, video, and mixed-media works.



Founded in 2002 by Francesca von Habsburg in Vienna, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21) represents the Thyssen family’s commitment to the arts.



The Museum of Contemporary and Performance Arts in Warsaw (Muzeum Sztuki Współczesnej i Performansu) is proposed by Grazyna Kulczyk. It is scheduled to open in 2018.



Myriam and Guy Ullens non-profit art contemporary center Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing opened in 2007, that allows for cross-cultural exchange.



In 2017 Renzo Piano is to build Leonid Mikhelson’s V-A-C foundation new headquarters, GES-2. a permanent exhibition and education space for the in Moscow.



J. Tomilson Hill plans to open a private museum in Manhattan inside the Getty building, a new Peter Marino designed development in will also house Lehmann Maupin’s new space.



The Würth Collection is one of the largest private collections in Europe they opened the Kunsthalle Würth in Schwäbisch Hall 2001 and Kulturforum Würth Chur in 2002.



Budi Tek in 2015 opened his own private contemporary art museum, named the Yuz, in an abandoned aircraft hangar in Shanghai.



Inaugurated in 2007, Anita and Poju Zabludowicz Collection‘s London project space presents a varied program of self-initiated group and solo exhibitions, commissions and residencies.
